Do I need to be a finance or economics major?
Absolutely not. M&T recruits all majors for several reasons. We are simply looking for the best and the brightest leaders. The program contains classes that can put everyone on the same page from an accounting/sales/finance perspective. In addition, we welcome the diversity of academic backgrounds and perspectives.
Can I apply if I am a December/January graduate?
Definitely. Although the program starts in mid-July, candidates may even have the option of starting early based on the needs of specific business units.
What if I have an MBA?
No problem. Although the MDP is designed for recent undergraduates, the class always contains several MBAs with limited work experience.
Does M&T sponsor international students?
No. Participants must be eligible to work in the United States on a full-time permanent basis without needing to be sponsored.
How many participants will M&T hire into the Management Development Program (MDP) this year?
M&T’s Campus Recruiting team plans to hire around 40 future leaders into the Class of 2008.
Is the MDP a rotational program?
No. Candidates will interview and be made offers for specific departments/divisions of the bank. The program itself, however, brings all participants together and provides an overview of each division through orientations and interaction with senior management.
What should I expect from the interviews?
The interviews will generally focus on you. Management will be looking to assess and discuss valuable internships/work experience, leadership abilities, ambition, communication skills and overall "fit" with M&T Bank. Your interviewers will spend less time explaining the Management Development Program and the history of M&T Bank. You should have that knowledge with you going into your interview.
How many different MDP positions may I interview for?
During your Home Office Interview, you may interview for up to two different positions. (ex. Business Banking and Commercial Marketing.)
What if I am not sure which position/department I would be a fit for?
Following your initial application, a member of the campus recruiting team can discuss positions and departments you may have questions about in order to match your strengths with the available positions.
Are all MDP positions resident at the headquarters in Buffalo?
No. Opportunities are resident throughout New York, Maryland, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia. Check the Position Descriptions section to find out which particular positions are located within each corresponding location.
Who takes care of the travel arrangements for Home Office Interviews?
Everything will be taken care of on our end. Depending on the distance you are traveling, Campus Recruiting will provide driving directions, book flights and accommodations, and put together an interview schedule.
What is appropriate attire at the bank and throughout the program?
The dress code at the bank is primarily business casual attire. However, most customer-contact roles, such as those within the branches, require business professional attire on a daily basis. Appropriate dress throughout the program will vary from day-to-day.
How many hours per week will I typically work?
This is NOT Investment Banking! Our typical week is around fifty hours, allowing for a pleasant work / lifestyle balance.
How much vacation time will I earn?
You will earn up to three weeks of paid vacation per year, in addition to eleven bank holidays. In the first calendar year that you join the bank, you will earn a pro-rated amount of vacation (two weeks) since you will start in July.
Does M&T have a graduate assistance program?
Yes. M&T has a tuition reimbursement program for those employees who decide to pursue a masters degree on a part-time basis.
